We hope that the resources above help you with things you can do to help prepare your child for their next big step. We very much appreciate that lots of you are at home with your almost-school boys and girls and may appreciate some fun activities to join in with whilst we are still in lockdown.
Here are 10 ideas for play that encourage learning in a fun and interactive way.
Play HOORAY! is an EYFS professional who we have been recommending to our current Reception children. We have had some lovely feedback from parents about her “play along” live sessions, so we have linked some relevant ones that you may wish to do with your child to help practise some of their key skills through some fun play ideas. Working on skills such as these would be great building blocks for your child starting school.
This is a pre-reading and pre-writing skill, getting your child’s brain used to the English language which reads from left to right.
This play along is great for number recognition, counting carefully and as a bonus, it is great for developing finger strength ready for holding a pencil too.
This is a fun way to help your child to recognise the letters in their name and know the order in which they appear.
We do lots of work with playdough in EYFS, as it is brilliant for strengthening hands and fingers reading for writing. We call this “fine motor skills” and it is a skill we develop lots throughout the first terms at school. The play dough party is a lovely way to give little fingers and hands a workout!
