Intent

Music has the power to connect people in an ever changing world.   It is the soundtrack to our lives.  The joy of music has a positive impact on the well-being of our children and whole-school singing unites our school community.  Through performing, children can express themselves.

Tynings musicians enjoy expressing their understanding of rhythm, pitch and volume through song.

Music at The Tynings

Music at The Tynings is taught through the Charanga music scheme which covers the key areas of music:  singing, listening, composing and performing.  The children become more confident with pulse and rhythm through learning a variety of engaging songs from different genres such as pop and rap.  They listen and appraise songs in the genre, learn to sing and perform a song and then play glockenspiels in time to the music.  There are also opportunities to improvise and compose.

As well as this, each week, teachers share three different pieces of music linking to a theme (for instance written by a certain composer or that begin with a piano solo.)  This not only exposes children to a wide range of musical styles but allows them to discuss their opinions on different music.  They also have opportunities to respond to music they listen to through art.

Key Stage singing assemblies take place once a week so children can sing songs together and feel a sense of community.  Many of these songs link back to our school values.

We also ensure children have the opportunity to perform to a wider audience.  At Christmas, EYFS and Key Stage 1 perform nativities and KS2 perform in a carol concert at Staple Hill Methodist Church.
